The Editors
The Fire Safety & Technology Bulletin is edited by Marcelo Hirschler (US) and Stephen Grayson (UK). Both are experienced academic and industry research leaders who publish widely and participate comprehensively in international forums, national and international codes and standardization work. Together they have a unique access to information of current fire issues in North America and Europe. They are helped by a team of experts to gather information on fire issues throughout the world.
Marcelo Hirschler has a background in university and industry as a private consultant (on technical and legal fire issues) undertaking fire research on a variety of plastics, fire, fire retardants, and fire testing subjects. He has worked in South America, Europe and the US, and speaks several languages. He managed an industrial plastics fire testing and research lab and has published some 500 papers and 6 books. He holds editorial positions in several journals. He is very involved in codes and standards development, including membership (past or present) in committees developing codes and standards (IBC, NFPA 101, NFPA 5000, ASTM E05, ASTM D20, NFPA, CSA, ISO, IEC, etc). He also participates in the development of other codes: National Electrical Code, residential, mechanical and fire codes. He chairs or has chaired multiple NFPA, ASTM and ISO committees or task groups.
Stephen Grayson has over 30 years’ experience managing academic and industrial fire research labs. He has specialized in the measurement and suppression of heat and hazardous combustion products. He was the co-editor, with Vyto Babrauskas, of the key monograph, Heat Release in Fires, and author of four other fire research books. He is Editor-in-chief of the Fire and Materials Journal. He is director of Interscience Communications Ltd and a co-founder of the instrument manufacturer Fire Testing Technology Ltd. He chairs ISO TC 61 SC4 (subcommittee on plastics) and task groups on fire and building products and is the UK principal expert into ISO, IEC and CEN fire committees, as well as participating in or chairing BSI groups.
